Being a "girl mom"

Yeah, this may get ugly.

I don't know how I'm going to be a good "girl mom." The truth is... I don't really like girls. Don't get me wrong, I have very close friends that are girls, of course. Hmmm.... maybe I should reword that sentence: I don't really like girly girls. Is that better? Just a little?

I grew up as a tomboy. I played soccer since I was 4. Four, people! ...it got me a college scholarship. I played basketball and softball and ran track. I always had close friends that were guys. I enjoyed summer nights playing kickball in the streets of our development. I was always {always} picked first in gym class. Even now, I love watching sports on TV. I drink beer {when I'm not PG, obviously.} Fruity drinks, no thanks. Yep, I'm a tomboy.

Now I will mention something that my sister's will never allow me to live down, and that was my 2 month stint as a cheerleader in 5th grade. Please excuse my lapse in judgment, but I thought it would be cool to be a "girl" for a change.

It wasn't.

How am I ever going to raise a girl? The doll aisle in Toys-R-Us makes me nauseous. For serious. It looks like someone threw up pink. I absolutely hate tutu's. No, maybe loathe is a better word? Cheerleading outfits for baby girls? You can NOT be serious. PINK SPORTS JERSEY'S!?!?! Unless that is the color of the team you are cheering for, they should NEVER be worn by anyone. Anyone.

How am I going to deal with pink clothes and bows? I'm hoping it will be better once she gets here. I know that if she asks for a doll, I'll buy it for her. If she asks to be a cheerleader? I'll drive her to practice and go to all her "games." But I won't like it, damn it. I don't have to like it.

After going back and forth {with myself} I have finally decided to put a little pink in her nursery. Just a little. It was VERY hard for me to come to this decision. I mean pink!?! The horror. But I thought this might be the first step in overcoming my fear and giving in to the fact that this girl thing is really happening. I'll be posting soon about the nursery plans, I promise.

Lastly, I don't mean to offend anyone with this post! If you love tutu's and hair bows and cheerleading outfits and pink uniforms :::shudders::: then good for you! I know my sister has them for my niece Grace and I still talk to her ;)

I am the exact same way! I also played Soccer my entire life (and was also really good at it). I was always picked first in gym class and I have three brothers which might explain how I ended up this way. In all your pics, your hair is blown dry and it appears you may have make-up on. I never do either. Ponytail and moisturizer for me, however, when I had my Gracie things totally changed. I still wear my hair in a ponytail, I still do not own make-up and I have to force myself to put my engagement/wedding rings on because I am not a jewelry person, but my daughter is the best dressed girl in town and always has a hair bow. Go figure and just in case you wanted to know.....in her newborn pics...she's wearing a tutu! It's not pink though!!!

I want to crawl under my desk and hide right now! :) I am a girly girl who loves sports and was very athletic growing up, I played softball from the age of 5 until my senior year of high school. That being said, I love the color pink, I love dressing Cecilia girly in dresses and hair bows, and I am even considering buying her a tutu (the horror!). ;)

I am getting ready to do a blog post of Cecilia in a pink Ravens jersey, I didn't buy it for her, I also don't believe in pink jerseys. I like jersey's in the actual teams colors.

Same here! I don't know what I would even do with a girl!

I am not really girly either (hair always up and no make-up on too and I don’t even think I own anything pink) and I was shocked that I was having a girl. How was I going to teach her to be girly?! I didn’t want to do pink in her room or really buy her pink clothes, so her room was green and very neutral and her clothes were very plain too. After having her I regret it all! I hate that her room isn’t pink and girly (don’t tell my husband but I think about re-painting her walls everyday :)). I buy her pink clothes and hair bows and even have the cutest picture of her in a Halloween tutu. Something about having a girl changed me and I now love it all! Except for pink strollers something about them bothers me ;)

SO FUNNY! I was a total girlly girl and when I had my first daughter I was excited for her to play dress up & play with dolls & barbies ... but much to my surprise - she has NO INTEREST in any of those things!! She has played soccer since she was THREE! hehe. Loves fashion, skateboarding, video games, coloring, riding her bike ...
So my point is - you never know what youre going to get - each child no matter the gender is his/her own unique person.
My youngest DD on the other hand LOVES to try on shoes already, spins around in circles singing & likes brushing her own hair already!! bahahha!

Im so curious what I'll get this time around - truth be told - Im scared to have a BOY! :D

I am the SAME WAY! I was thrilled to find out we were having a boy and often tell DH I want all boys - no girls. I hate girly stuff, I can't see myself playing tea party and Barbie, I hate headbands and hairbows on little girls. IDK, maybe when it is your daughter you are holding in your arms it is so different, but fingers crossed you will get a tomboy :)

I am LOLing at you going to her cheerleading "games". I was a cheerleader for 11 years (hee hee!) and my Division I collegiate athlete husband teases me for being an "athlete" as a cheerleader. I'll never live it down. You'll be a great girl mom and will open her eyes to being a well-rounded girl! =)

I PRAY my next child is a Boy, and there I just jinxed myself ;)

This is hilarious! I so could have written the same thing {tomboy/athlete since early childhood except for that short stint as a cheerleader in elementary school}. I always thought that I wanted two girls before DS was born. Now that I have a son, I want like 3 more. I don't know how I could possibly handle all the pink girly-ness that is out there these days. To make matters worse, my ILs think that girls are helpless little princesses.

Good luck in your transition to "girl mom!"

I'm going through the same thing!! My sport was basketball though. I played on boys leagues and was named the team leader in floor burns and bruises from our local newspaper. I'm kind of scared of having a girl. My sister is offering to come up from Florida to teach her how to be girly.

I know it must be surreal having a girl after getting used to being a "boy mom". But you will do great. Imagine all the late night talks you'll have about boyfriends and gossip. If she likes to dance then you will take her to dance lessons and you will be so proud of her twirling in her tutu. My dad was proud of all FOUR of his little dancer girls.

I was so excited to tell my Dad that he was having a grandson (when I found out about Landon). He was the first one I called. I thought he would be so happy to FINALLY be getting a boy in the family. You know what he said? "Well, you know I'm partial to girls. It's all I know!" Haha.

You're just having a few of those same feelings. But as you get closer and then Brynn is born you'll never look back!

I know EXACTLY how you feel! My little girl will not have a pink Chargers jersey, no way! I'm adding a few splashes of pink to her nursery, just because I don't want all the blue to look too boyish. I'll be fine with however she turns out, but I am definitely not pushing the pink on her!!!
