The Name Game

Names. They're so hard to come up with, aren't they? I mean, you're solely responsible for picking a name out for a person that they will have to live with for the rest of their life. Talk about pressure.

The first step is coming up with a list of names that you like. Then you have to investigate each name individually thinking about it from every possible angle. How do they sound with our last name? What will the baby's initials be? Does the initial acronym spell a bad word? Does the name rhyme with anything? If so, what does it rhyme with? Can elementary school students use that against him/her in a scary battle for a swing on the playground?

See what I mean? Pressure.

Coming up with our girl's name was easy. I've loved the name since I was 11. When we got pregnant with Carter and started thinking of names for the baby, I told Bob said girls name and he loved it too. Sweet. No fighting, no vetoing, no nothing. So clearly the baby was going to be a boy right? Right.

Boys names. Ohhhhh, boys names. They are so difficult. When I saw the name Carter on a baby name list, I immediately liked it. I didn't love it. I liked it. The other name that I liked was Ethan. That's a name that I have liked since high school, but of course it had to go and be all cute and popular by the time I had a kid, right? With names like Jenn and Bob, there was NO WAY I was going to name my kid something that was in the top 3 most popular names for the last few years. So that was removed from the list early. A few of the other names we had on the list weren't overly exciting either of us, but I just kept going back to Carter.

Right before the ultrasound I asked Bob what he thought of the name Carter and he immediately liked it. He said it was a name that was in a popular comic strip that he use to read as a kid and has always liked the name. Awesome. Something that we both liked and that we could agree on.

Sometime after the big ultrasound where we found out we were indeed having a boy, Bob and I were in his truck driving home. I told him that the entire time I was watching the baby on the screen, all I could think about was the name Carter. He looked like a Carter to me. Bob agreed, we decided that was going to his name, we shook on it, and from then on it was official. And I haven't looked back since. I absolutely LOVE Carter's name. LOVE it.

Onto baby #2.

We plan on using the girls name that we had picked out for Carter. That name is...
Brynn Sophia

My gawd do I love that name.

Of course, we're having trouble with boy names again. There is only one boy name that I absolutely LOVE with all of my heart. That name is...
Reid Joseph

As you can already tell, I'm a huge fan of last names for first names. Some of you may not know this, but our last name is a first name, so I think it's a cool combo =) Reid is a name I loved as soon as I heard it. Joseph is my dad's name, so Bob and I had already decided that if we had another boy, that would be his middle name for sure.

Of course, when I told Bob that I loved the name Reid, he said that is was just "okay." I can work with "okay" ;) I kept bringing it up in conversation. I just loved the name and I thought that it would kinda grow on him and then he'd start to like it. Wrong. The other day while driving home he officially vetoed the name. He looked at me and said "Honey, Reid is not going to happen." :::dies::: Oh no! I was so upset. Like I said, it was really the only name that I had considered for a boy. The only name that I LOVED. Bob always likes the names I suggest, so I just thought that he would like this one too.

As you can see, I'm still having a really hard time accepting the fact that I will never have a baby boy named Reid. =(

Back to square one.

We had a little discussion, and we came up with...
Lucas Joseph

We both like Lucas. We both like Luke. It sounds good with Carter {not too similar}. It sounds good with our last name. You can't really make fun of it. It's a nice strong name. I still like Reid.

This is going to be difficult.

Names are SO hard. I just try not to think about it anymore...hopefully, I'll get some brilliant insight during labor, LOL.

Our last name is also a first name and so we had the same problem. My husband and I are used to being addressed by our last name since people often think it's our first.

I like Reid but I also like Lucas. I guess you'll know better in a few weeks :)

I LOVE the name Reid, too bad Bob vetoed it! :(

I wasn't in love with my daughter's name, my husband was. I wanted to name her Leah, but we have a good friend who had a girlfriend (now fiance) with that name and my DH thought that would of been weird to have to Leah(s). The more I thought about it though, the more I started to love Cecilia and it grew on me and now I can't imagine her having any other name. She looks like a Cecilia and not a Leah. :)

Good luck on deciding a name, it's SO hard!

Sounds like we like the same boy names! We considered Ethan too but we already have Elijah and I didn't want to "E" names. We settled on Connor Luke if this baby is a boy. I like both Reid and Lucas...good luck deciding! :)

Keep pushing for Reid! It's a great name and goes with Carter.

Just to be devil's advocate here... Lucas~Mucus, Luke~Puke. Probably one of the easiest names for playground taunting!

I like Reid but I also like Lucas too. Hubs and I totally disagree on EVERY name (not that we're prego but hopefully for the future). The only thing we agree on is middle names because they are family names. Good luck deciding!

Maybe this baby will be a girl and you will have no problems agreeing after all!!

I LOVE Lucas/Luke. I had a Luke in my class one year and he was a love, but my friend named her son Lucas that name is out for us now.

Good Luck deciding. It is a lot pressure to put on someone!

I like both Brynn and Lucas. I think you're set either way! I need to do a post on this only I'm thinking we might not reveal the names this time. Last time we picked Landon at 6 weeks and stuck with it before we even knew he was a boy! This time . . . no such luck. We can't agree on anything. He vetoes everything I come up with.

Oh I love the name Reid! We were also considering Ethan for our first, but it has become too popular(plus our babysitters son is Ethan) Joseph is Oliver's middle name...such a classic name.

MMM, I like both - but Reid is defintely more unique!

I like last name first names too! My son is Lane (it's my MIL's maiden name and husband's middle name) I love Reid and Luke. My brother is Luke so that name is out for us. Goodluck, it's probably bound to be another boy since you can't decide. ;-)

I love all of your name selections! I agree, boys names are very difficult!!! Personally, I am VERY partial to Lucas Joseph as that is my little boy's name!!! Good luck with finding the perfect name for your baby!

I too, like last names for names. My oldest son, Landon's middle name is Walker. But it does have special meaning--Walke was my mom's maiden name. My newest son, I had such a horrible time picking out his name. I had so many-- I definitely knew Grant was going to be his middle name (it was paternal grandma's maiden name. I had Keaton, Hudson, and Broderick "Brody", and a few others picked out. (See all are last names). I also really liked the name Lucas (big One Tree Hill fan..lol), but my friend who was prego at the same time decided to name her son, Luke. So it was out for me. In the end we put all names in a bowl and let Landon (13mo at the time) choose-- we thought it would be a cute story for them later. Here's the name that was chosen........Carter Grant :) I also LOVE the name Carter!!

P.S. I really like Reid-- keeping working on him ;) Or let Carter choose..lol

Brooke- that is the cutest story ever!! And maybe I have a chance with Reid then if I can talk Bob into letting it go in the bowl, lol. I love all of your name choices though!

But I LOVE the winning name best! ;)
